Fence Repair Tips for Stained or Mildewed Fences

How to Repair Stained or Mildewed Fences

A fence is a great addition to your property. Not only does it provide privacy, but it can also be a focal point for your yard. However, if you have white vinyl fences in humid areas, they’re likely to get stained or mildewed over time. Stained or mildewed fences are unsightly and can really detract from the appearance of your home. Luckily, we have some fence repair tips that you can use to repair your stained or mildewed fences at home:

Remove Loose and Damaged Boards

If the fence is made of wood, you can simply replace the damaged boards with new ones. If the fence is made of metal, however, it may be more difficult to repair. Repair kits are available at many hardware stores and can help you fix your damaged fencing quickly and easily without having to buy an entirely new piece.

Use a Pressure Washer

You’ll want to use a pressure washer, which can be rented from your local hardware store. Make sure you wear protective clothing and eye protection when using the pressure washer, as well as gloves and shoes that cover your feet when working with chemicals. It’s important that you remove any loose or damaged boards before beginning this process.

Prime the Bare Spots

Prime the bare spots and allow it to dry. For a more thorough treatment, prime your fence before staining with a compatible primer. Primer will help the stain adhere to the wood, which means it will last longer and look better after it dries. It also helps prevent mildew and rot.

Apply a Fence Compound

Now that the fence is dry and clean, it’s time to apply a coat of fence compound over the whole thing. You can use either a trowel or paint roller for this step—the key is just to make sure you get an even layer on all sides of your fence. If you’re using a trowel, dip it in water first so that when you apply it to your fence surface, it will spread more easily.
